Evolving Lego structures with GAs

May 30th, 2007

ThinkArtificial just published an interesting post on the use of a genetic algorithm for evolving Lego brick structures. The system is given a goal (for example to bridge two tables in the lab) and the GA with a cool physics simulator is ready to go.
Check out the post here. More information about the project [...]

Interview with Rodney Brooks

May 29th, 2007

A few weeks ago ZDNet published an interesting interview with Rodney Brooks, the director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) and CTO of iRobot. Check it out here.

…and thanks for all the fish

May 29th, 2007

Dave Goldberg just posted a picture from my trip to Japan (thanks) where I am visiting Shige Tsutsui. The first day of the trip we went fishing, it was my first time and I was surprisingly successful (well, I had a good teacher, Mikio Nakanishi). I really enjoy trips to Japan, Shige is a great [...]

Billion-bit optimization presentation slides now online

May 22nd, 2007

Kumara Sastry and David E. Goldberg gave a presentation on solving a problem with over billion bits with a genetic algorithm (in fact, an estimation of distribution algorithm), the work they have done together with Xavier Llora at IlliGAL. The slides can be found here. See also related posts here and here.

Special issue of JAEA on particle swarm optimization

May 21st, 2007

The call for papers of a special issue on particle swarm optimization of the Journal of Artificial Evolution and Applications has recently been publicised. The deadline is July 20, 2007. Click here for more information.

Robotic imagination, GP, and iRobis

May 19th, 2007

Several days ago mensnewsdaily published an article RoboBusiness: Robots that Dream of Being Better on the work of Peter Nordin and his colleagues at iRobis who use genetic programming in robotics. See also this post by Dave Goldberg at IlliGAL Blogging. A brief quote from the article:

On the last day of the RoboBusiness Conference in [...]

Humies 2007 deadline getting closer

May 17th, 2007

The deadline for the submission of human-competitive results with genetic and evolutionary algorithms (organized at GECCO-2007) is May 28, 2007. More information about this competition can be found here.

Slides for the introduction to Goldberg’s GA course online

May 15th, 2007

The slides for the first lecture of Dave Goldberg’s famous course on genetic algorithms (GAs in search, optimization, and machine learning) are now available through slideshare (see here). The web site of the course can be found here. I took the course almost 8 years ago and the funny thing is that my most cited [...]
